Heading toward a police state slowly but surely

9/11 was a watershed moment in American history. Since that event, the liberty of Americans has been significantly eroded. The Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act, the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act, and the latest National Defense Authorization Act all contain frightening provisions that have taken away much of our freedom.

Additionally, the government is increasing the number of "checkpoints" across America as you can read here. Until Americans wake up and put the pressure on the government to halt such abuse, the loss of freedom will accelerate.

The Patriot Act

There has been harsh criticism of the Patriot Act, specifically because it seems to greatly enhance the government's ability/authority to keep a close eye on us. Here's an interesting article regarding the act.

Government scare tactics

Amazing article here on how the government tries to scare people with ridiculous statements and lies. God forbid Senator Rand Paul tries to do the right thing. Most of the rest of congress wants none of it (serious debate) so they can rule our lives.

Founders' intent irrelevant?

In his book The Constitution in Exile, Judge Andrew Napolitano lists all the ways the Constitution and our civil liberties have been assaulted by the growth of big government. He discusses an important 1934 case, Home Building & Loan Association v. Blaisdell, where the Supreme Court "flatly subordinated the Contracts Clause to whatever the Court and the legislature would deem a 'valid police pupose.' It also dismissed the Founders' intent for the Contracts Clause as being irrelevant in 1934. The code words "emergency legislation" and "valid police purpose" seem to be just what George Orwell warned us to watch out for in 1984. Any time the government claims to be helping by way of an "emergency," it usually just means it is taking power from individuals."

All Americans should read this important book. You'll be especially disturbed by the chapter on the Patriot Act.
