In a civilized society, should anyone or any government ever force anyone to do anything against his or her will as long as that person does not infringe upon the life, liberty, or property of another?

The Cold War is back

In order to make Russia happy, the U.S. just signed a deal to build a missile defense system in Poland just 115 miles from the Russian border. What a way to make friends! Pure insanity. The Polish government is run by fools. Instead of dismantling what they've got, declaring themselves neutral and friends with all, they've decided, along with our infinite wisdom, to put themselves in harm's way once again. I guess WWII wasn't devastating enough.

I guess the powers that be in Washington, D.C. decided that since things are "going well" in Iraq, they'd better step up the pressure on Russia. Maybe Russia should put a missile defense system 115 miles from Washington to shut up the Pentagon.

The US was the sole nuclear power for three years but didn't attack Russia. The Soviet economy collapsed and the US didn't attack Russia. Why would Moscow have any concerns at all about ten US ballistic missile interceptors? The Russians have thousands of missiles. Why does Russia do everything possible to proliferate nuclear weapons in places like the Middle East and N. Korea and then object when a meager defense is proposed?

You're leaving out the behind-the- scenes work the US did in Georgia. I'm not saying they're innocent, but we're anything but angels. Don't forget the US murdered Diem and installed the Shah in Iran. We've been meddling for a century. I'm pro-US - if it's the foreign policy of Washington and Jefferson, who wanted to leave others alone. I don't buy into the neocon version (the Cheney/Rumsfeld/Bush version) of interventionism.

It's nice to find someone interested in these things. My problem with Russia is that it has been problematic for an eternity. None of my Eastern European friends like the Russians. Of course the Shah was disgusting, as were a few of our actions in South America. But that in no way equates to the tens of millions killed and dominated by Stalin. Why didn't the US conquer the world when we were the only nuclear power? We have never been that kind of nation-even under W. Now Russia and China are once again seeking world domination via control of energy resources among other ways. You're right- the Cold War is back, but I'm afraid not many Americans perceive this. Scary.
